Assignment Two Research

Assignment two requires us to create a GH 3D surface with parametric features. Construct a physical model of this geometry using 3D laser printing as a manufacturing process.  The task of constructing a physical model of geometry using a 3D printer places a huge limitation on what can be created,  Due to this i have decided to do some research to determine what type of geometry i can and cannot make.

Geometry One
This design would be a very interesting design to create as their is a lot of undulating surfaces with a unique pattern. The manufacturing side of this geometry would be fairly easy without much hassle.  For the purposes of the second assignment a similar type of geometry could be created using GH and the 3D printers.

Geometry Two

Whilst this would be a very interesting and fablous design for a roof like structure, for the purposes of the second assignment such a formation would be almost impossible to create.  The amount of supports needed to print the geometry as well as the lack of thickness would cause the 3D print to fail

 Geometry Three
out of all three pieces of geometry this is my favourite.  This geometry is so simple yet expolres complex shapes and forms within GH.  In terms of trying to print this geometry, i believe it could be done.  A simple extrusion of the shape would give the geometry a solid planar basis on which to 3D print.

Assignment One Final Letter Model

As I had to remove the voronoi from my model to ensure it was a structurally stable letter. I decided i still wanted to do something different.  As this was my first assignment using Rhino and Grasshopper to produce a physical model i decided to experiment with the basics of laser cutting.  I then proceeded to using the Red (cutting) and Blue (etching) abilities to create my solid D shape.

On the Faces of the 'D' i used coloured lines blue in illustrator to create the outline of the inner (smaller) D shape as well as creating a range of unique lines, which in my opinion created a 'funky' look to my basic D shape.

I thoroughly enjoyed the creation of this first assignment as it allowed me to explore the possibilities of not only the software, but the huge potential of laser printing which was no evident two weeks ago!

I look forward to the future laser cutting assignments, as well as exploring the possibilities of forms created in grasshopper, to then be turned into a physical form.
